DIBRUGARH: Dibrugarh has launched a road safety campaign ahead of the festive season, concluding with Magh Bihu in mid-January. The initiative follows instructions from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during his recent visit, where he emphasized the importance of enhancing safety measures during the festive period.

Previous years' data has shown a rise in road accidents during New Year celebrations and the accompanying picnic season.

As part of the campaign, authorities have placed safety banners at key picnic spots along the Brahmaputra River, including Bogibeel Ghat, Maijan Ghat, Joggers Park, and Aaithan Ghat.

These banners highlight critical road safety concerns, such as the dangers of drink and drive, over-speeding, and vehicle overloading.

The district administration has also planned heightened vigilance on major routes to popular picnic destinations, particularly on weekends and public holidays when the number of visitors increases.

Volunteers will be deployed at picnic sites to engage directly with visitors, promoting awareness and adherence to safety rules. The campaign aims to ensure a safe and enjoyable festive season for all.

CM Sarma held a review meeting today to address strategies for reducing road accident fatalities in the state, particularly during festive seasons. He directed authorities to implement strict preventive measures to enhance road safety.

The meeting analyzed the causes of road accidents and noted a 14% decrease in fatalities this year compared to the previous year. It was observed that a significant number of accidents occur on national highways, while rural areas face challenges such as inadequate lighting, lack of proper signage, and absence of speed breakers, contributing to the frequency of accidents in these regions.

Efforts are expected to focus on addressing these issues to ensure safer roads across the state.
