DIBRUGARH: In a significant move, the Greater Dibrugarh Press Club has submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the renaming of Mohanbari Airport in Dibrugarh after Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.

The appeal was made through the Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner, Vikram Kairi, with similar memoranda sent to Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and State Cabinet Minister Prasanta Phukan.

The club highlighted Dr. Hazarika’s immense contribution to Indian music, culture, literature, and cinema, stating that naming the airport after him would be a fitting tribute to his legacy.

The Press Club emphasized that such a move would not only honor his contributions but also elevate Assam’s cultural identity nationwide while describing him as a global cultural icon who gave voice to Assam on the international stage.

The memorandum signed by Club President Manjit Bora and General Secretary Ratul Gohain also noted that renaming the airport would aid in promoting tourism and economic development across the Northeast region.

They referenced similar tributes such as the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur.

The proposal has received significant public support and is being seen as a step toward giving Assam’s cultural heritage the recognition it deserves.
