DIBRUGARH: Dibrugarh has been identified as one of 24 cities across India selected for the rollout of the innovative Water Metro project, a water-based urban transit system designed to modernize city transportation while promoting sustainability.
The announcement was made following a review visit by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways-cum-Dibrugarh MP, Sarbananda Sonowal, to the Kochi Water Metro—India’s first integrated water transport model.
The inclusion of Dibrugarh in this national initiative is particularly significant given the city’s strategic location on the banks of the Brahmaputra River.
Known for its historical use of riverine routes for transport and commerce, Dibrugarh is well-positioned to benefit from this ambitious project. Alongside Dibrugarh, Guwahati and Tezpur have also been selected from Assam to revitalize the state’s inland waterways and ease urban congestion.
Minister Sonowal expressed enthusiasm for the transformative potential of the Water Metro in Assam. “The Kochi Water Metro is a shining example of India’s ability to blend tradition with innovation. Inspired by its success, our ministry has approved technical feasibility studies in 24 cities, including Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Tezpur, to explore replicating this model,” Sonowal stated.
The Water Metro system aims to integrate water-based travel into existing urban mobility frameworks. Featuring modern vessels, last-mile connectivity, and advanced safety measures, the model promises efficient and commuter-friendly service. The initiative also seeks to reconnect urban populations with their historic waterways while reducing emissions and traffic congestion.
