142 quintals of fish home-delivered during COVID-19 lockdown in Assam

GUWAHATI: The Kamrup (Metro) District Administration, as a part of its COVID-19 precautionary measures, allowed door-to-door sale of local fish in Guwahati from April 10. On the first day around 11 quintals of local fish was sold at the FISHFED counter located in Rupnagar, stated a release.

The department has taken keen initiatives to stop the flow of fish from red zone corona hot spot area to orange or green zone areas.

Three fish market committees of greater Guwahati started selling of fish from April 11 onwards with great success involving hawkers whose licenses were issued by the District Fisheries Development Officer, Kamrup in consultation with district administration so that unauthorized selling may not take place. As on April 19, about 142 quintals of fish were sold through door step marketing in the entire State with a total value of about Rs. 5 crores which was received by about 7,000 local fish farmers with a very small margin of share by some 50 wholesalers. More than 1,60,000 families have been covered so far. At the same time, about 1,000 hawkers are also benefitted who have been earning Rs. 600-1,000 per day by selling local fish.
