81 rights violation cases against police in 2020: AHRC

GUWAHATI: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) registered 85 cases against the police in the year 2019 followed by 81 cases registered in 2020 till December 7. This is a shocker ahead of the Human Rights Day as the force on which people depend on for their safety is being alleged of violating human rights.
In the current year, a total of 273 cases have been registered at the AHRC till December 1. Additionally, 108 cases are pending since previous years which take the total number of cases to 381. Out of the total cases, 178 have been disposed till October 31.
The AHRC data reveals that in 2019, as many as 317 cases were registered. The total cases with the Commission stand at 491 which include 174 pending cases. While the Commission disposed 383 cases during the year, 108 cases remained pending. In 2019, with the AHRC, Kamrup Metro registered the highest human rights violation cases with 69 followed by Cachar with 27 cases and Hojai with 20 cases. The least number of cases were recorded in Majuli, South Salmara and Charaideo with one case each. Among other districts, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Chirang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, and Dima Hasao registered two cases each.
