AALSA demands admission fee exemption for Law Students in Private Colleges

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Law Students' Association (AALSA), in collaboration with its 17 district committees, sent a memorandum to the Assam Education Minister on Monday regarding the exemption of admission fees for the students studying in private law colleges in the State.

The copies of the memorandum have also been sent to the Chief Minister and the Commissioner and Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, Assam.

The association said that during the pandemic all sections of people in the State have been under cash crunch irrespective of their social strata, and in such a situation the students of private law colleges need exemption of admission fees.

They raised the demand for total exemption of fees for students lying below the poverty line, and 50 per cent waiver for those lying above the poverty line.

AALSA president Kishore Kalita said, "Due to unavailability of adequate number of government law colleges in the State, the students have to knock the door of private law colleges to get law degrees. Such students come from various economic backgrounds, and during this pandemic situation it is very difficult of these students to pay admission and other fees.

"In the 2018-19 annual Budget, the State government made a proposal to set up ten government law colleges in the State. However, that proposal has not been implemented as yet. We want the proposal implemented as soon as possible."
