GUWAHATI: With black badges in their lapels, the members of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) are going to demonstrate in all district headquarters with black flags on February 22, 2021 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Dhemaji in the State.

The protest has been planned in support of their demands for implementation of the Clause VI of the Assam Accord, solution to the problems arising out of mega dams and declaration of floods and erosion as a national disaster.

In a statement issued to the media on Saturday, AASU president Dipangko Kumar Nath and general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah said that the Prime Minister should spell out as to when Clause VI of the Assam Accord would be implemented in his Dhemaji visit on February 22. During his two recent visits to the state, he never uttered any word on the report of the high-level committee on Clause VI of the Accord. They further said that the constitutional safeguard is the right of the indigenous people of Assam.

"Let the Prime Minister announce halt to Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project till the life and property of the people in downstream Assam are protected. We dare the Prime Minister to show his accountability as he had promised to obey the suggestions of experts on the hydel project to the letter," the statement said, and added, "The Prime Minister should ensure immediate release of funds to fight erosion and floods in the State."
