After Rains, It’s Spell of Power Failure & Flash Floods

GUWAHATI: After heavy rains in Guwahati since May 4 in connection with cyclone Fani, the city has been experiencing a spell of power cuts.

Most of the areas of Guwahati are still reeling under power cuts, ranging from one to six hours, from Saturday. Some of the affected localities are Chandmari, Athgaon, Satgaon, Noonmati, Ganeshguri, Beltola, Hatigaon, Hengrabari and Zoo Road.

Heavy rains and strong wind lashed Assam on May 4 and damaged houses and disrupted power supply in many parts of the city. Broken branches of trees led to tripping of lines in the power distribution network of the Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL). Due to the prevailing weather condition in the city on May 4, the 33 KV power line of the APDCL was snapped.

APDCL statements said that strong wind and continuous rainfall on Saturday caused serious damage to electrical infrastructure in many parts of the State. Restoration works are being undertaken by the APDCL on a war footing to ensure expeditious restoration. The unscientific drainage system of the city stood exposed again when heavy rains lashed the city. Major water-logging problems were reported in Beltola, Zoo Tinali, Panbazaar, GNB Road, Kahilipara, Hatigon, Chandmari, Panjabari and Anil Nagar on Rajgarh Road. Traffic congestions were badly felt on Saturday night. Power failure in many areas added to the commuters woes. Water was seen till this morning. Traffic movement was disturbed across the city during the evening as several arterial roads and low-lying areas were inundated. The mobile network connectivity was also not found in many areas in the city.
