GUWAHATI: BBC News Hindi, Tamil, Telegu, Punjabi, Gujrati and Marathi broadcast the life story of Agnikonya Chandraprabha Saikiani. She is the only Assamese to have made it to the list of ten inspirational life stories of the nation for BBC coverage.

Born on March 16, 1901, Chandraprabha Saikiani set up an LP School and took active part in spreading women education. She had to ride bicycle to reach far of places for making women emancipation a reality and to do away with the practice of social disparity. She was the first woman to protest the system of purdah for women members at the Nagaon Axam Xahitya Xabha session. She had to be jailed during the Noncooperation Movement. Later she joined the Congress. In 1972 she was honoured with Padmashree for her literary service. BBC broadcasting the life story Chandraprabha Saikiani, who had not hesitated to be an unwed mother, pleased the people of Assam, a press release issued by Assam Pradeshik Mahila Samiti said.
