GUWAHATI: The AGP (Asom Gana Parishad), an ally of the ruling coalition at Dispur, is now set to hold its general conference in Guwahati on August 27.

The general conference of the regional party was scheduled to be held in December last year. However, the party had to put on hold the conference because of the anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) agitation in the State from December 2019. That phase of agitation in the State was immediately followed by the corona-induced lockdown that hasn't allowed the party to hold its all-important general conference. With corona positive rate showing a little improvement now, the party has decided to hold the conference on August 27 in Guwahati.

This general conference of the AGP is very crucial since the party has 2021 Assembly election in the State ahead, besides the formation of its new central executive body. It is at this general conference that the party will decide the political course it has to follow, besides deciding the modus operandi to gear up organizational activities to strengthen the base of the party.

At present Atul Bora is the president and Keshab Mahnata is the working president of the regional party. Both Bora and Mahanta are ministers in Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal's Cabinet, besides senior AGP leader Phani Bhushan Choudhury. The AGP was formed in 1985 in Golaghat after the six-year-long Assam Agitation.
