AGP: Vote against BJP, Congress to oppose Bill

GUWAHATI: The AGP has appealed to the rural voters of Assam to vote against the BJP and the Congress to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Addressing the media at party headquarters at Ambari in Guwahati on Friday, leader Manoj Saikia said: “This time around, the panchayat poll in the State is not as usual. This is a voting with a view to safeguarding the language, literature and culture of Assam. Voting for the BJP or the Congress is tantamount to inviting Bangladeshis to the State. The stands taken by the two parties on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill have proved it beyond doubt. As and when the AGP takes a decision in favour of the people of the State for their interests, these two national parties take a polar opposite stand. The AGP always follow the mandate of the people of the State. Doing politics of driving a wedge between the Hindus and Muslims can never be accepted by the AGP. This is not the culture of Assam. Foreigners are foreigners. They cannot be divided on the basis of their faiths.”

Saikia further said: “The isn’t a party thatis governed by its think tank at Delhi. Our party is run at the interests and mandate of the people of the State. The interest of a party can never be greater than that of the people. When one has to choose between national interest and power, the latter doesn’t have any value, nor does alliance have any. The AGP has all along been speaking in favour of the people, and will continue to do so. The AGP is committed to ensure equal rights and equal development through the panchayati raj system. The members of the AGP to be elected as panchayat representatives will work for the people of the State.”
