GUWAHATI: A one-day workshop on the Package of Practice for Field and Horticulture Crops and the Organic Package of Practices for selected crops of Assam 2023 was held at the College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara, recently. It was organized by the Directorate of Agriculture, Assam, and the Agriculture University, Jorhat.

In the inaugural session of the workshop, Director of Agriculture Bhaskar Pegu said in his address that to have a way forward to better productivity in agricultural produce, there is a need to have access to ideas from the Package of Practices, including new technologies. He stressed the practice of cropping intensity and crop diversification for better opportunities for surplus yield. Further speaking, Pegu said that the workshop will be helpful to all the agriculture officers and double the income of the farmers in the state.

The publication of the Package of Practice 2023 should be done immediately for the benefit of the agriculture officers to prescribe ideas and distribute seeds to farmers in due season so that they can get maximum benefit, said Vice Chancellor, Assam Agriculture University Bidyut Deka. He said this while addressing the inaugural session of the workshop. Further speaking on the occasion, the VC said that both the Agriculture Department of Assam and Assam Agriculture University must work hand in hand for the benefit of the agriculture sector of the state.

A package of practices refers to the process of increasing agricultural output by implementing scientific farming methods in place of conventional farming practices. It includes all aspects of farming, right from the selection of seed to the harvest.

In the Package of Practice of 2023, a total of 59 recommendations in Ravi, Kharif, Horticulture, and Organic Crops were included by the Assam Agriculture University.

Director of Horticulture Triranga Bharatiya Borah, Director of ASOCA Mousam Hazarika, Associate Director of the Directorate of Extension Education, Jorhat Dr. Manoranjan Neog, District Agriculture Officers from the state, senior scientists, and others were also present during the workshop, stated a press release.
