AITUC slams OIL, demands rehabilitation of Baghjan victims

GUWAHATI: The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) Assam State Committee staged a protest at Guwahati Club on Wednesday demanding high-level probe on the Baghjan blowout.

The AITUC demanded Oil India Limited (OIL) to bear the responsibility of resettlement of the Baghajan victims. The Committee alleged that the negligence and corruption on the part of OIL has lead to the tragedy which has caused irreversible loss to the locals and the area.

It has demanded an aid of minimum Rs 30 lakh to each family on the first installment. Besides the financial aid the committee is further demanding OIL authorities to responsibility for the victims so that they can go back to their places.

The committee said that as the uncontrollable oil and gas emissions is affecting the Dehing Patkai Rainforest by causing harm to its flora and fauna. The committee further alleged, "It's unfortunate to witness the negligence of both the Central and State government who did nothing, but let the fire destroy Duliajan and Assam from May 27 to June 15."
