AJYCP urges Mizoram CM Zoramthanga to solve boundary issues peacefully

GUWAHATI: The AJYCP (Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad) has sent a letter to Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga requesting him to take the lead along with his Assam counterpart in creating a peaceful environment to promote the unity and progress of the entire North-East.

The letter was handed over to Residential Commissioner of Mizoram House, Guwahati.

"The legacy of the Seven Sisters is a matter of pride for the North-East. The unity and harmony among the people of the Seven Sister States have always drawn jealousy, hatred and concern for those forces who do not want to see the North-East as strong and united. The recent border clash in the Assam-Mizoram border has put a stigma in this age-old peaceful relation existing amongst the people of these two neighbouring States," the AJYCP stated in the letter.

"…Do you not think that such violent incidents between the two States will only encourage those forces who intend to disrupt the unity, peace and harmony amongst the Seven Sisters," the AJYCP questioned Zoramthanga. Further, the AJYCP stressed that the boundary problem is a Constitutional matter and has to be resolved politically.

"The Lushai Hills, once upon a time was a district of Assam. In 1972, the erstwhile Lushai Hills district got the status of a Union Territory and became Mizoram. In 1987, Mizoram acquired statehood. Today, why do border disputes exist between Assam and Mizoram? Why a situation of violence and firing has arisen? The Mizoram Police assisted by civilians armed with sophisticated weapons fired and killed those who belonged to Assam. If boundary dispute exists, the Mizoram government has to seek the intervention of the Union Government," the AJYCP said.

The body further urged the CM to have an open discussion with Assam Chief Minister. But the filing of cases by the Mizoram government against the Assam Chief Minister will only increase the bitterness between the two friendly neighbouring States, the AJYCP underlined.

"Problems will exist and solutions can also be found. All such political issues should be solved politically. You being a senior political figure, having a long revolutionary background is matured enough to identify those elements who are friends and enemies for the North-East," the AJYCP added in the letter.
