GUWAHATI: Demanding scrapping of the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) the lawyers on Friday hit the streets, took out a procession to Raj Bhawan and submitted a memorandum to the Governor Jagadish Mukhi.

With their demand to scrap the CAA, the Gauhati High Court Bar Association, Lawyers' Association Amingaon, Gauhati High Court Advocates' Association and many other members joined the rally called by All Assam Lawyers' Association.

Talking to The Sentinel, advocate of the Supreme Court of India Manish Das said, "Started at first in Assam, the protest has now spread to West Bengal, Karnataka, Hyderabad, Maharashtra, Punjab and every part of India. The Assam people in London are also protesting with the Gamosa. Modi himself takes the gamusa with him and he says on record in Jharkhand that the Assamese are Pakistani. No one is accepting the act. Hence people irrespective of caste and creed are protesting against in every village and city. The Assamese, Assamese- Bengali, Assamese- Marwari, Assamese- Punjabi, Assamese- Muslim, and Assamese- Bihari everyone is against it. The act is not acceptable and what the government is speaking is not clear at all."

Das further said, "Petitions are filed in the Supreme Court where 14 petitions among 59 petitions are from Assam. Even after being an advocate of the Supreme Court, I've come here raise voice against Citizenship Amendment Act , because we need to save our motherland."

"Being advocate, we know what are there in this act. I appeal Amit Shah to read the case of Kesabanada Bharati. Shah is not a law specialist. There's no such law that can't be scrapped where there's hollowness. Looking at this act, we'll get to see that it has touched our basic structure. If the Supreme Court recognizes this act then our question is what does the NRC procedure completed under the supervision of the Supreme Court carries? Besides waste of time, all of us had to face acute mental and physical harassment in the name of NRC. If the Supreme Court agrees to the act, then the government should provide compensation to those whose name has come in the NRC and Foreigners Tribunal. If the NRC is cancelled the why would we agree to this act." Das added.

Executive member of Gauhati High Court Bar Association, advocate Rita Das Mozumdar said, "The government is behaving like they know everything and we're something who doesn't understand the law. They're trying to make people understand something which are not in the law. If the law is correct then why they're not giving any implementation date till now. It is because they know that this act is draconian and they've brought this act with certain motive.

Shailen Das said, "Where law will be broken, the lawyers will fight and when lawyers will fight the decision will always be correct. We're waiting for the verdict by the Supreme Court on 22."

Advocate of Gauhati High Court Bimal Chetri said that the lawyers have come out with the goal to scrap the CAA as; this act will invite destruction to Assamese language and literature.
