Guwahati: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has escalated its attack on Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, demanding his immediate resignation and urging the central government to impose President’s Rule in the state.

Addressing the media at the party headquater in Guwahati on Sunday, AIUDF general secretary and MLA Dr Hafiz Rafiqul Islam accused the state government of orchestrating eviction drives that they claim amount to ethnic and religious persecution, particularly targeting Bengali-speaking Muslims in Upper Assam.

Islam alleged that the Chief Minister’s administration is engaging in “systematic atrocities” against legitimate Indian citizens, some of whose families have lived in Assam for over a century. He further accused the government of deploying “goons” to intimidate communities under the guise of law enforcement, and urged the Gauhati High Court to take suo motu cognizance of the alleged human rights violations.

“The Chief Minister has lost all moral authority to govern Assam,” Islam said, adding that Sarma’s “blatant disregard for the Constitution” disqualifies him from continuing in office.

The AIUDF also accused the BJP-led state government of pursuing a double standard — allegedly working to grant citizenship to Hindu migrants from Bangladesh who entered Assam after 1971, a move the party claims will alter the state’s demographic and electoral landscape. The party appealed to the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) to oppose these “dangerous policies.”

Criticizing the introduction of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) framework, the AIUDF urged the Election Commission to stick to existing voter list guidelines and resist what they called “BJP influence.”

AIUDF leader Ashraful Hussain alleged that eviction drives — including those in Bilasipara — were politically motivated, aimed at creating Hindu-majority constituencies before the 2026 assembly polls. He further claimed that leased lands are being taken over and handed to corporate groups, naming the Adani Group in particular.

The party demanded adequate compensation and fair rehabilitation for all displaced families, warning that such policies risk deepening social unrest in Assam.
