Amri Karbi bodies demand autonomous district

GUWAHATI: Various Amri Karbi organizations on Tuesday have raised their demand for an autonomous district - AmriLongri. The organizations expressed great concern on Government of Assam for keeping 'silence' on the issues of AmriKarbi community.

"By birth AmriKarbi is ST (H) but Government of Assam is not giving this status till date. Since their ancestors of KarbiAnglong are in ST (H) status, why then their descendants AmriKarbi living outside KarbiAnglong and DimaHasao are not treated as same with their ancestors. Hence, the community is being deprived from birth, ancestral and constitutional rights," stated the AmriKarbi Students' Union (AKSU).

The AKSU argued that according to Article 342, a part of group within a tribe may have same status with that particular tribe. So AmriKarbi being sub-tribe of Karbi it is their constitutional right to get ST (H) as Karbi Tribe. It is violation of the Article 342, as well as constitutional rights, said the AKSU. The organizations that raised the demand are - AmriKarbi National Council, AmriKarbi Students' Union, AmriKarbiArlasoAsem, AmriKarbiBangtheAsem, AmriKarbiTsornamAhartsiAmel, and AmriKarbiRuksakAsem.
