Anti-CAA protests evident of secular fabric of Assamese society: Ghulam Nabi Azad

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Senior Congress leader and leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad on Tuesday said the massive anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAA) protest in Assam is evident secular fabric of Assamese society.

Azad told reporters here on Tuesday that after the historic Assam Agitation the State has witnessed unprecedented protests against the CAA. He said the people has braved curfew to carry out their democratic movement.

“But the government instead of understanding the sentiment of the people has adopted the tactics of perpetrating atrocities on students and other protestors. For the first time in the history of India students have been beaten up mercilessly for staging democratic protest. Atrocities on students was never a culture of India. It is a undemocratic and fascist culture created by the BJP,” Azad said.

Azad alleged that with an aim to distract the citizens from the real issues the BJP government is indulging in all sorts of divisive politics

“Abrogation of Article 370, NRC, CAA are all part of the game which BJP is playing from 2014 to keep the attention of the public away from issues like economic downturn and unemployment,” he said.

“What happened to promises of depositing 15 lakhs in everybody’s account, creating employment for 19 crore youths. Nothing happened,” Azad said. On the issue of NRC in Assam, Azad among 19 lakh people who were left out from the final list should be given an ample opportunity to prove their citizenship as many genuine Indians are also on that list.
