Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI: Apart from the falling tourists’ footfall because of the anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) agitation in the State, the theatre industry in the State is also feeling the ripple effects of the agitation. The industry has suffered around 30-40 per cent loss because of the agitation.

The anti-CAA agitation, according to people associated with the theatre industry in the State, has made a section of people opting not to go for entertainment. They say that most of the theatre troupes that used to exhibit three shows a day had to abandon two shows as the number of theatre goers fell drastically in the State. Even established theatres troupes like that of Abahan Theatre, Raj Tilak Theatre, Hengul Theatre etc have been feeling the ripple effects of the anti-CAA movement in the State.

Thousands of people in Assam are associated with the theatre industry, and they have been eking out a living through their theatre performances for nine months a year. However, the current situation in the State has made them jittery over their and their families’ future. Most of theatre artistes blame it on the government for bringing the anti-Assam CAA.
