
GUWAHATI: APDCL (Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd) and OTPC (ONGC Tripura Power Company Limited) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Wednesday for the development of a 250-MW Battery Energy Storage System in phases. OTPC is a Joint Venture Company (JVC) of Oil and Natural Gas Company Ltd, Gas Authority of India Ltd, India Infrastructure Fund-II and the Government of Tripura.
The storage once made operational, will help Assam immensely by, inter-alia, meeting electricity demand during peak hours, enhancing grid stability, reducing carbon footprints and generating employment. OTPC Managing Director Sanil C Namboodiripad said that the project for the store-and-utilize facility of electricity is a necessity for both Assam and OTPC, and this development will help reduce the generation of electricity from coal-based plants in the north-eastern region. It will help India attain the Prime Minister's vision of Net Zero Emission by 2070.
APDCL Managing Director Rakesh Kumar described the day as historic as Assam became one of the pioneer states in the county to excogitate for Battery Storage, a press release said.
