Around 1.24 MT of plastic waste used to construct a road in Narangi Military Station in Guwahati

Guwahati: In line with the Government’s mission against single-use plastic and initiative to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic waste, around 1.24 MT of waste plastic has been used to construct a road in Narangi Military Station which is a pilot project of Military Engineer Services (MES) for road construction.

Notably, there media reports confirming that as per the World Economic Forum, the roads made from waste plastic are not only greener but are also long-lasting against extreme weather conditions like floods and heat as compared to the other conventional roads.

In Assam, Goalpara is the first district to have constructed 237.652 km of the 565-km total stretch using such green technologies.

Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar recently told the Lok Sabha that around 40 percent of plastic waste collected in India remains uncollected and littered on the streets. A whopping 25,940 tonnes per day of plastic waste is generated in India.

Therefore, to deal with the growing menace of plastic pollution, the Centre has made it mandatory for all road developers in the country to use plastic waste for road construction which is indeed a very good step towards a greener environment.
