Irregularities in implementation of Asom Darshan Scheme

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The Asom Sattra Mahasabha has urged the Chief Minister to look into the implementation of the Asom Darshan Scheme.

The scheme was introduced in 2019-20 to preserve the heritage and culture of places of historical and religious importance in the state. Under the scheme, 915 religious institutions received financial grants worth Rs 10 lakh each. The Asom Sattra Mahasabha has alleged that in some places, this scheme has not been properly implemented and expressed concern over this.

Talking to The Sentinel, Asom Sattra Mahasabha general secretary Kushum Kumar Mahanta said, "Today I visited the South Salmara-Mankachar district where there is a namghar in Adarsha Manjuri gaon. This namghar had been granted Rs 20 lakh under the Asom Darshan Scheme and other schemes for its development. But local people have alleged that the development works of the namghar were not carried out properly. Local people doubt that only a meagre amount of the total fund had been used for taking up development works of the namghar. Moreover, the namghar also has not been constructed properly."

He further said, "I will complain to the Chief Minister about this. Some political leaders and gaon panchayat members were involved in the implementation of the Asom Darshan Scheme in the namghar. We urge the Chief Minister to order a probe in this matter."

Mahanta added that there was a xatra in the South Salmara-Mankachar district – the Sri Sri Sankar Madhav Xatra. "After visiting the xatra today, the Asom Sattra Mahasabha has decided to recognize this xatra spread over 4 bighas of land."
