Dimoria: The state-level cycling competition under the Khel Maharan event began today for two days at Chaknibari in Sonapur. A total of 420 participants from 35 districts across the state are taking part in this event. There have been complaints that the event, considered significant, started later than the scheduled time.

Today, boys and girls under 14 years and boys above 17 years showcased their skills in the competition. Notably, nearly ten cyclists were injured due to mechanical faults in the cycles during the event. At the very beginning of the competition, one cyclist was injured on the track just about 100 metres from the starting point when a wheel of their cycle suddenly detached while riding.

It has been alleged by several parents that the cycles provided by the government to the participants were of substandard quality. Problems like wheels detaching while in motion, brake failure, and loose handlebars reportedly occurred. Due to these mechanical issues, more than nine cyclists got injured during the event.

The injured participants were immediately admitted to Sonapur District Hospital for treatment. On the other hand, the winners of today’s event were awarded a cycle each by the Department of Sports and Youth Welfare. Despite some initial technical difficulties, the authorities stated that this competition will encourage hidden talents from rural areas.
