Guwahati: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) led by Badruddin Ajmal has decided not to ally with any party in the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections. Instead, the party will follow an “Ekla Chalo” (go alone) policy and contest the elections independently. This decision was taken at the AIUDF’s central executive meeting held in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Party sources say AIUDF is preparing a strategy to contest only in about 35 minority-dominated constituencies in the state. According to a key resolution passed in the central executive meeting, the party will not field candidates in all 126 assembly seats but will focus on a limited number. Alongside this, several other important resolutions were also adopted at the meeting.

In the meeting, the AIUDF strongly condemned and expressed deep concern against the government’s inhumane eviction drives, incidents of communal violence and unjust arrests, and the forced deportation of individuals labeled as foreigners.

Additionally, the party also decided to appoint central observers in each constituency, indicating its intention to contest in around 35 seats, similar to its past performances. It also plans to take part in the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) elections.

Commenting on the matter, AIUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam said, “We haven’t received any proposal for an alliance, nor are we interested in any. People of Assam have already elected 3 AIUDF MPs and up to 18 MLAs. There is no rule that we must have an alliance. AIUDF is an independent party. By contesting limited seats under the ‘Ekla Chalo’ policy, we aim to deliver good results in 2026 election.”
