AIMC demands apology from CM and action from NCW

GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Mahila Commission (APMC) has moved the National Commission for Women (NCW), requesting the latter (NCW) to seek an immediate CBI investigation into, as it (APMC) says, 'the Assam Chief Minister's revelation that during the previous 15-year (2001-15) rule of the Congress government in Assam, women used to get government jobs by trading their virginity'.

Terming this as a dangerous revelation that has caused massive outrage among women in Assam, even by those who don't hold government jobs, APMC president Mira Borthakur Goswami said, "In those 15 years, lakhs of women would have taken up government jobs: from the most humble Anganwadi worker to the senior-most civil servant. And if most, even if not all, had to trade their virginity… All of these women are daughters, mothers, and sisters of some families…"

Meanwhile, APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) president Bhupen Borah has instructed all district Congress Committee presidents to lodge FIRs against the Chief Minister in each district in this connection on May 1, 2025.

Meanwhile, in a statement, All India Mahila Congress (AIMC) president Alka Lamba strongly condemned the 'deeply offensive remarks' made by the chief minister. She demanded that (i) the Chief Minister must issue a public apology immediately for his appalling remarks, (ii) the Prime Minister should take cognisance of the issue and clarify whether this reflects the BJP's official stance on women, and (iii) the National Commission for Women must take suo motu cognisance and initiate action against the Chief Minister.
