GUWAHATI: On the occasion of National Fish Farmers' Day on Sunday, Fisheries Minister Parimal Suklabaidya took part in the observance of this important day at Directorate of Fisheries.

Speaking on the occasion, Suklabaidya said that the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana has not only created valuable assets but also aims to double the income of fishers, fish farmers and fish workers by 2024.

Suklabaidya highlighted that under the able leadership and motivational guidance of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam is marching fast towards becoming 'Aatmanirbhar' in fish production..

The Minister said the fishery sector provides employment to crores of people and is a sector with untapped potential. Despite challenges pertaining to infrastructure, the Central and State Governments have ensured that the fisheries sector continued to register an annual growth rate of more than 10 per cent.

He stressed on environment-friendly fishing and need for sustaining the sector while continuing the consumption. Suklabaidya also laid emphasis on developing scientific fishing system and other related aspects.

The Minister said that adequate compensation will be given to the farmers whose dwelling houses and ponds were affected by the deluge. "Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has assured that compensation will be given to the fish farmers whose houses and ponds were damaged in the floods. We will prepare a comprehensive list in consultation with the district authorities," he added.

The Minister felicitated two progressive fish farmers, Sarat Das and Rulen Hazarika, as also Dihing Integrated Agriculture Firm on this occasion for their impressive achievements in fish production, stated a press release.

Suklabaidya also released quality fish seed at the FISHFED pond as a part of the event.

Those who were present at the event included Vice Chairman of FISHFED, Dillu Sarma, the Director & Joint Director of Fisheries, MD of FISHFED, DDF, Officials of the Fisheries Department and fish farmers of Assam.
