GUWAHATI: Chief Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced on Saturday that five colleges of the State would get university status in the next two years. State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Bhabesh Kalita on Sunday welcomed this decision of the government.

The five colleges of the State which will be upgraded to university are Handique College, JB Law College, Nagaon College, Sivasagar College and Lakhimpur College.

Hailing this decision of the State Government, Kalita said that this would bring a significant change in the education sector of Assam. Also, it would help students to pursue higher education as the number of seats would increase.

Kalita also welcomed the discussion held between Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in Jorhat on Sunday. He said that both States were willing to take steps to solve the vexed inter-State border problems and these joint efforts would promote peace and harmony in the north-eastern region.
