GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma tendered his resignation as a member of the Gauhati High Court Bar Association (GHCBA). Dr. Sarma submitted his resignation letter to the Association's president today.
Dr. Sarma did practise as an advocate in the high court from 1994 to 2001.
In his resignation letter, Dr. Sarma said, "Considering the present position adopted by the Gauhati High Court Bar Association, which is in contrast and in conflict with the stand of the honourable High Court and also of the Government of Assam, I find myself in a morally difficult position as I am unable to align myself with the opposition to the full court's decision."
On the current conflict regarding the proposed shifting of the premises of the Gauhati High Court and other courts, Dr, Sarma said that it was the high power committee constituted in consultation with the Chief Justice and two honourable judges and others that selected Rang Mahal in North Guwahati as a suitable site for the setting up of a judicial township based on its suitability and convenience. He said that the high-power committee chose the site from six sites proposed by the government. "And only after recommendations of the said high powered committee, duly approved by the full court of the hon'ble Gauhati High Court, has the government started the process of acquiring lands at the recommended site at Rang Mahal."
On the allegation that the Chief Minister had his political benefits in shifting the high court premises to Rang Mahal, Dr. Sarma said that in post-delimitation, Rang Mahal is no longer under the Jalukbari Legislative Constituency.
