GUWAHATI: The BJP Assam Pradesh has pooh-poohed the Congress leaders’ vehement protest against the cabinet decision to provide arms licences to ‘the original inhabitants and indigenous Indian citizens in vulnerable and remote areas’.
In a statement issued to the media today, the BJP Assam Pradesh said, “The Congress party has consistently shown a complete lack of sensitivity towards the safety and security of Assam’s indigenous sons of the soil and Indian-origin citizens — a truth that history has repeatedly proven. The recent remarks made by Congress leaders, including Gaurav Gogoi and Rakibul Hussain, once again expose this harsh reality. Every time the issue of safeguarding the rights of indigenous people arises, the Congress is gripped with unease. For them, any step taken to protect the interests of Indian-origin citizens is seen as a threat to their appeasement-driven vote-bank politics.”
In a strongly worded statement issued to the media, Assam BJP chief spokesperson Manoj Baruah slammed the Congress for its criticisms of the government’s decision to grant arms licences, wherever necessary, to Indian-origin residents living in vulnerable international border areas, and for opposing the deportation of declared Bangladeshi foreigners as per the Foreigners Tribunal verdicts.
Baruah said that historically, the Congress party has stood against Assam’s indigenous population. From Syed Sadullah’s pro-Muslim League policies before independence to the Congress-led state machinery after independence, the party has always prioritised power politics over the rights of native citizens. “By nurturing a specific section as a vote bank, Congress has repeatedly stabbed Assam’s indigenous identity in the back. During the language movement, the medium movement, and the historic Assam Agitation, Congress took an open anti-indigenous stance. The people of Assam will never forget the bloodshed and betrayals under Congress rule — those are dark chapters written in shame,” he said.
“Even today, Congress continues with the same destructive agenda. This is extremely unfortunate for Assam,” Baruah remarked, adding that providing arms licences to border-area residents is purely a measure of self-defence, born from the existential threat they face due to relentless cross-border infiltration. “Only the victims know the reality on the ground. Leaders like Rakibul Hussain and Gaurav Gogoi, blinded by vote-bank politics, deliberately ignore the lived experiences of these people,” he said.
Referring to the Chief Minister’s repeated clarifications that only those declared foreigners by tribunals who have not appealed in the High Court are being deported, Baruah condemned Congress leaders like Rakibul Hussain for spreading misinformation and misleading the public. “It is shameful that Rakibul Hussain, instead of supporting the lawful process of deportation, has chosen to once again play the role of a protector of illegal Bangladeshis. This is not just misleading — it is dangerously anti-national,” he asserted.
The BJP declared in the statement that the people of Assam will never accept such identity-destroying stances of the Congress party and will give a fitting response at the right time. “Congress is committing the same sins again — siding with intruders while abandoning the indigenous. The people are watching, and they will respond with the power of truth and memory,” the statement concluded.
