GUWAHATI: Recently, some youths from Chamaria stopped two trucks coming from a dam site in Choudhurypam village under Chaygaon LAC in the Kamrup district. When the group of youths along with police checked the vehicles, they found more than 500 bags of free textbooks. The books were new and belonged to the current academic session. On investigation, it was found that the books were being transported to Haryana.

After this incident came to light, the State Education Department has sought report from all district education officers on whether extra books belonging to the current academic session are available anywhere and if yes, where have the books been stocked.

Education Department sources said that there were two possibilities in this incident– first, schools had shown higher enrolment figures than the number of students eligible for free textbooks, and second, schools had not distributed the free textbooks among the eligible students.

Hence, the department has sought report from the district education officers so that it could look into the matter thoroughly.
