GUWAHATI: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who is the Deputy CPP leader in the Lok Sabha, urged the Prime Minister to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the January 6 mine tragedy at Umrangshu in the Dima Hasao district.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, MP Gogoi said that this tragedy is not an isolated incident. The issue of illegal mining in the region has been ongoing for years, with numerous such accidents reported in the past. Illegal rat-hole mining continues to thrive in Assam, despite being banned by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in 2014 and the subsequent retention of the ban in 2015, Gogoi said.
