GUWAHATI: Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has marked a remarkable year in 2024, providing essential medical care to a total of 11,55,673 patients. The hospital’s outstanding performance was highlighted in a press conference convened by Principal Achyut Baishya and Superintendent Abhijit Sharma.
In 2024, GMCH treated an impressive number of 10,12,188 OPD patients and 1,13,749 inpatients. The Emergency Department handled a total of 1,43,485 emergency cases, with a significant number of patients requiring critical care due to accidents. Notably, GMCH provided treatment to 19,153 cases related to road traffic accidents (RTA) and 719 burn cases.
GMCH’s surgical department performed a total of 48,917 surgeries in 2024, with 29,061 being major, complex surgeries. The hospital also witnessed 13,172 childbirths, showcasing its role as a key provider of maternal and child health services in the region. Despite the high patient volume, GMCH reported 8,118 deaths during the year.
One of the notable achievements of GMCH in 2024 was the success of its IVF programme, with five successful deliveries. This programme has brought hope to 26 couples seeking fertility treatments.
To further enhance its surgical capabilities, GMCH is set to introduce robotic surgery equipment in January 2025, initially available for orthopaedic procedures. Additionally, the hospital is poised to take a major step forward in its infrastructure development with the construction of a new 820-bedded building.
