Guwahati: Gauhati University (GU) has been listed among the top eight universities in India with the highest number of ragging incidents, according to the latest report by the Society Against Violence in Education (SAVE). The report, titled “State of Ragging in India 2022-24,” was released and analyzes complaints reported across Indian educational institutions over the past two years.
As per the findings, Gauhati University recorded 15 complaints during this period. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology in Kolkata topped the list with 75 complaints, making West Bengal the state with the highest number of ragging cases.
The report highlights key recommendations to combat ragging effectively. One major suggestion is allowing the National Anti-Ragging Helpline (1,946) to accept anonymous complaints to ensure victim safety. Institutions have also been urged to form Anti-Ragging Squads with dedicated security personnel and to install CCTV surveillance in hostels, monitored by security teams, anti-ragging committees, and parents.
Other recommendations include placing freshers in separate hostels, in line with UGC and NMC guidelines, and making it mandatory for institutions to file police complaints within 24 hours in serious ragging cases. The report further suggests that the Health Ministry should organize annual anti-ragging conventions with committee heads from over 700 medical colleges. Additionally, freshers and their parents should have access to senior students’ parents’ contact details to improve communication and safety.
With these alarming figures, the call for stricter anti-ragging measures in Indian universities has grown stronger. Authorities are expected to take immediate steps to curb ragging and ensure a safer academic environment for students.
