GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has started a free hearse service for the city's residents as part of a significant effort to support grieving families. Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania formally launched the service, known as Muktirath, on Thursday.
The initiative received a boost with the donation of a new hearse vehicle to GMC by Delta Publicity. GMC intends to launch six additional free hearse services by April and May in order to increase the availability of this crucial service. The goal is to guarantee that each of Guwahati's six divisions has access to a dedicated free hearse vehicle.
The GMC Muktirath service will operate daily from 6 AM to 10 PM, providing free transportation of deceased individuals for last rites. Families in need can call 8811007000 to avail of the service.
Meanwhile, GMC has issued a strict warning against lessees who collect fees for services while using GMC receipts. The corporation clarified that during the tender process, advance payments are collected from lessees for a period of six months to a year. However, GMC does not issue any official receipts to lessees, and any misuse will face legal action.
With this initiative, GMC aims to provide dignified and accessible funeral transportation for the underprivileged while ensuring transparency in service operations.
