Assam Government plans new autonomous councils for ethnic communities in State

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government is planning to create autonomous councils for the Kooch-Rajbongshi, Moran and Motak communities in the State. The proposed new councils will be set up in the line of Rabha-Hasong and Sonowal-Kachari autonomous councils.

Under the proposed councils, there will be various small constituencies. The people from these constituencies will elect their members to the councils. The elected members will select their respective Chief Executive Members (CEMs). While no decision has been taken on the number of constituencies under the proposed councils, the government is, however, going ahead with drafting of the new move. The decision whether the government will initially run the councils with elected or nominated members has also not been taken. Apart from the elected members there is a possibility of inclusion of nominated members by the State Government in the proposed autonomous councils. The Cabinet is expected to take decision in this regard soon. The move to create autonomous councils for the Kooch-Rajbongshi, Moran and Motak is beside the demand of granting ST status to the three communities.
