Assam Government to Start Tea Garden Students’ Scholarship

GUWAHATI: State Government would constitute a scholarship scheme for the students of the tea tribe community studying in 10th and 12th standards in the name of Simon Singh Horo. The scheme, earmarking Rs 10 thousand per student, would cover students of all tea gardens in the state.

In addition, the existing scholarship schemes run by the State Government for the benefit of the tea community students would also be continued. To make the intended beneficiaries aware of the various schemes being implemented by the State and the Central Governments, ‘Shramik Mitras’ would also be appointed by the State Government in every tea garden.

According to a press release, this was decided in a meeting of State Level Advisory Committee for the Welfare of the Tea Community held at Chief Minister’s Conference Room at Janata Bhawan under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister today.

In the meeting, a decision was taken to convert kaccha houses of labourers to concrete in 15 tea gardens under Assam Tea Company Ltd. where 3500 out of total 9000 kaccha houses would be made concrete in the first phase. Contractual Data Entry Operators would also be appointed in 48 subdivisions of the state for ensuring correct implementation of schemes for the tea garden population.

The issue of providing Rs 25 thousand to small scale traders and businesspersons in tea garden areas was also discussed in the meeting. The topic of skill development centres set up for the tea community youths in different parts of the state not being made operational was also taken up in the meeting. The issue of keeping 50 per cent seats reserved for the tea community youths at the centres set up under Assam Skill Development Mission also came up for discussion.
