Assam Governor attends artificial limb distribution programme at Cotton University

Guwahati: Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya distributed artificial limbs to some beneficiaries with special needs at a programme organized by Bharat Vikas Parishad at the KBR Auditorium, Cotton University, on Sunday.

The event, aimed at promoting social inclusion and empowerment, saw the distribution of artificial limbs to differently-abled individuals, symbolizing a renewed sense of dignity and opportunity.

In his address, Governor Acharya extended a warm welcome to the recipients and lauded Bharat Vikas Parishad for its dedicated efforts in uplifting the lives of specially-abled citizens. The Governor emphasized that such initiatives not only transform lives but also inspire social inclusion.

Highlighting both Central and State Government initiatives focused on Divyangjan welfare, Shri Acharya cited key schemes such as the Deen Dayal Divyangjan Sahajya Yojana, Mukhyamantri Jeevan Prerna Yojana, and the ADIP Scheme. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a society where individuals with special needs can lead lives marked by dignity, independence, and equal opportunity.

The Governor also spoke about the national vision for Divyangjan empowerment under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. He referred to various reforms, financial aid programs, and technological advancements that have significantly enhanced accessibility and inclusion. Special mention was made of institutions like ALIMCO, Jaipur Foot, DRDO, and ISRO for their pioneering contributions in assistive technologies benefitting both civilians and defense personnel.

Drawing attention to the rural-urban divide, Acharya noted that nearly 75 per cent of India’s specially-abled people reside in rural areas. He urged NGOs and civil society organizations to prioritize outreach to remote and underserved communities, terming such service as “true service to humanity.”

Quoting stories of Paralympic champions and successful Divyang entrepreneurs, the Governor called up on all sections of the people  to recognize the immense capabilities of persons with disabilities. He lauded the role of the National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation (NHFDC) in supporting Divyang entrepreneurship through financial assistance up to Rs 5 lakhs, stated a press release.
