Assam has attained self-sufficiency in fish seed: Parimal Suklabaidya

GUWAHATI: State Fishery, Excise and Environment & Forest Minister Parimal Sukladaidya has said that Assam is the first State in the Northeast to have attained self-sufficiency in fish seed fry production, supplying it to the neighbouring States.

Addressing the media here on Sunday, Suklabaidya said, "Assam produced 5,678 million fish seed fry in 2015-16 to 9,519 million fish seed fry in 2019-20, registering a growth of 67.65%. In fish production, the State took a quantum jump from 2.94 lakh MT in 2015-16 to 3.73 lakh MT in 2019-20, registering an increase of 26.87%. The administrative control of revenues has been shifted from the Revenue department to the Fisheries Department in 2020.

"Assam demonstrated the availability of local fish in sufficient quantity through sale of local fish by its federation, FISHFED maintaining COVID protocol during lockdown giving huge profit to cooperatives.

"The State achieved the distinction of being the first state in the breeding of Magur. The farm produced @ 2 lakh seed (fry) and distributed in 15 districts of Assam last season."
