GUWAHATI: BJP MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami said that the media needs to get respect, whether anybody likes them or not.
During the Question Hour, Goswami raised a question regarding the journalist fraternity. He wanted to know the number of journalists killed by miscreants in the state, the status of journalists’ pensions, their insurance cover, etc.
In his reply, Information and Public Relations Minister Pijush Hazarika said that as many as 14 journalists lost their lives in the hands of miscreants in the state. Twenty miscreants have been arrested in such cases that are pending with the court.
On journalists’ pensions, the minister said senior journalists are given a pension at the rate of Rs 8,000 per month, and after their demise, their widows get Rs 4,000 per month. He said that the government has not taken any steps regarding insurance coverage of journalists.
Requesting the minister to consider hiking the amount of pension for journalists, Goswami said, “Whether we like journalists or not, that doesn’t matter. However, we should respect the media.”
