GUWAHATI: The All Assam Non-provincialized Teachers Association, Assam to express their deep frustration and disappointment with the government's lack of response to their long-standing demands. The organization, representing the interests of teachers employed in non-provincialized schools across Assam, has been tirelessly advocating for the provincialization of these educational institutions.
In a press meet, President Harmohan Bora and Secretary General Amar Jyoti Saikia recounted the series of unfulfilled promises and assurances made by the government. In a meeting with the Chief Minister on October 20, 2022, the organization was assured that their demands would be addressed and resolved. However, the government's inaction has been evident, with services such as mid-day meals and free textbooks being curtailed since April 1, 2023, with consequences that have been far-reaching, with a significant decline in student admissions and the subsequent closure of 2,319 schools, ranging from lower primary to college-level institutions.
The organization has had multiple meetings with Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, but despite assurances, no tangible progress has been made. In a meeting on April 12, 2023, the minister assured the organization that the provincialization of venture schools would be initiated, but no action was taken after that.
A meeting on August 3, 2023, the education minister, under CM's order, promised the start of the process of provincialization from this year, but later the same minister reversed his stance, stating that there was no scope for provincialization.
The All Assam Non-provincialized Teachers Association has given the government an ultimatum, demanding that a decision on provincialization be announced by December 5, 2024. Failure to do so will prompt the organization to stage a protest against the government. Furthermore, a hunger strike has been announced from December 16, 2024, to press for their demands.
