GUWAHATI: The Assam Police arrested Sukur Ali on Monday following widespread outrage over his inflammatory remarks concerning the revered Kamakhya Temple and the Ahom community. Ali’s statements, made during a Panchayat election campaign, went viral and triggered a storm of criticism across the state. He claimed that Mughal emperor Aurangzeb had donated land for both the Ram Temple and Kamakhya Temple, assertions that have been widely condemned as historically inaccurate and deliberately provocative.
Ali further fueled public anger by stating that the Ahom community had “done nothing for Assam,” a remark that drew sharp rebuke from political leaders, historians, and civil society alike. Multiple FIRs were lodged in regions including Bijni, Upper Assam, and Guwahati, with various groups demanding Ali’s immediate arrest. Right-wing groups like the Bajrang Dal and local Muslim organizations like the Local Muslim Parishad joined in criticizing Ali’s statements, citing communal disharmony and insult to cultural heritage.
The Goalpara Police detained Sukur Ali, and authorities confirmed that he is being held under multiple sections related to promoting enmity between communities and making derogatory public statements. Police officials stated that further investigation is underway, and legal proceedings will follow based on the evidence collected.
