GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the police would lodge an FIR on the incident during the ‘Raj Bhawan Chalo’ agitation of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on December 18, 2024. The police will conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident, he said.
Reacting to the incident, the Chief Minister said in his X handle, “The institution of the Governor stands above partisan politics. Yesterday, Congress party leaders attempted to forcibly enter Raj Bhawan by breaching police barricades and causing chaos in the vicinity. The police will register an FIR and conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident, including a review of the video recordings. Henceforth, no demonstrations will be permitted near Raj Bhawan; a designated area has already been allocated for protests and demonstrations.”
APCC’s legal cell secretary, Mridul Islam, lost his life, and several Congress workers and media persons suffered breathing problems when the police used teargas to disperse the Congress agitators who were staging the ‘Raj Bhawan Chalo’ protest in Guwahati yesterday. Along with the rest of the country, the APCC also staged a Raj Bhawan gherao programme at the call of the AICC (All India Congress Committee) in Guwahati in protest against the One Nation, One Election Bill; installation of smart meters, the situation in Manipur, issues relating to Adani, etc.
Meanwhile, a section of journalists staged a protest today at Guwahati Press Club and elsewhere in the state against the use of tear gas on journalists who were covering the ‘Raj Bhawan Chalo’ programme of the APCC yesterday.
