Guwahati: The Directorate of Higher Education, Assam, has directed several institutions to engage retired teachers from August 1, 2025. As per an official notification issued by the Director of Higher Education, the principals (i/c) of four colleges, Government Model Women College, Mangaldai (Darrang); Government Model Degree College, Chirang; Government Model Degree College, Lahorighat (Morigaon); and Government Model Degree College, Borsola (Sonitpur), have been instructed to appoint two retired faculty members in each department. The engagement of experienced retired faculty is intended to ensure the smooth commencement of the academic session scheduled from August 1, 2025.

Responding to a query on the ongoing debates doing the rounds in the state on the issue of engagement of retired faculties in government model colleges in the state, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biwas Sarma said, “Students don’t enrol themselves in colleges that don’t have experienced teachers. Most of the model colleges we have established are on the verge of closure due to lack of students. After an investigation, it has come to light that students are not interested in enrolling themselves in the model colleges that lack experienced faculty members. And that has led us to take the decision to engage retired teachers in 50 percent of the teaching posts in such colleges. Lack of experienced teachers dissuades students, and when we engage new teachers, the students of the next generation don’t enrol themselves in such colleges. We need to see both sides of the problem. A judicious mixture of fresh and experienced teachers can strike the balance.”
