Guwahati: The Assam State Zoo has expanded its avian collection with the addition of seven new bird species through an animal exchange programme with Chhatbir Zoo in Punjab. Among the newly introduced species are the Comb Duck, Chukar Partridge, and Java Sparrow, aimed at enhancing the zoo’s conservation and educational efforts. Announcing the development on social media platform X on Saturday, the Assam State Zoo emphasized the significance of such exchange programmes in fostering collaboration between zoological parks and promoting wildlife conservation.

Officials stated that the newly arrived birds would enrich the zoo’s ecosystem while offering visitors a chance to observe a wider variety of avian species. They further highlighted that such initiatives play a vital role in ensuring genetic diversity and strengthening conservation efforts across zoos in the country.

The Assam State Zoo authorities expressed optimism that this exchange would bolster their commitment to species preservation and public awareness, reinforcing their mission of wildlife conservation and education.
