Guwahati: Marking 50 years since the imposition of Emergency in India on June 25, 1975, the State BJP launched a three-day observance of what it has termed “Constitution Murder Day.”

A special public exhibition was inaugurated on Thursday at the State BJP headquarters to showcase the alleged horrors and constitutional violations committed during the Emergency declared by the then Indira Gandhi-led Congress government. The exhibition was formally inaugurated with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by former state BJP president and MLA Siddhartha Bhattacharya. The event was attended by senior party leaders, including Assam BJP president and MP Dilip Saikia, who delivered a scathing address against the Congress party.

Speaking at the event, Saikia said, “The dark days inflicted upon the nation by the Congress party can never be forgotten. We shall never allow such days to return in the future. The Congress and the Gandhi family trampled upon India’s democratic values to cling to their political power.”

He added that it was ironic for Congress leaders to display the Constitution publicly while having “butchered its soul” by amending it 102 times out of a total of 109 amendments.

The BJP also recalled the hardships suffered by citizens during the Emergency era — suspension of fundamental rights, censorship of the press, forced sterilizations, and imprisonment of political opponents.

As part of the commemoration, the Assam BJP honoured several Loktantra Senanis (Soldiers of Democracy) who had been imprisoned or persecuted during the Emergency. Among those honoured were Bipin Bihari Kalita, Dr. Ram Chandra Deka, Prantosh Roy, Guru Pada Bhowmik, Manmohan Bharali, Ranjan Bora, Subrata Sarkar, Tansukh Rathi, Bhaskar Kolkarni, Manoj Saraf, Tarawati Sharma, Govind Goswami, Ajay Dutta, and Mahavir Swamy. These individuals emotionally shared their experiences from the time and called on the younger generation to remain vigilant in safeguarding democratic values.
