Guwahati: In a significant development for air connectivity in Assam, Tata Group Chairperson N. Chandrasekaran has responded positively to a request from Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi for the introduction of a direct Delhi-Guwahati-Jorhat return flight.
Gaurav Gogoi, who is also the Deputy Leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party in the Lok Sabha, had formally written to Chandrasekaran on January 18, highlighting the travel difficulties faced by residents, students, and professionals due to the lack of direct flights. Currently, passengers must endure long road journeys or layovers, making travel inconvenient.
In his letter, the MP underscored Assam’s historic ties with the Tata Group, which has played a key role in the state’s tea industry, education, healthcare, and technology sectors. He stressed that improved air connectivity would not only ease travel for people in Jorhat, Golaghat, and Sivasagar but also enhance tourism to major destinations such as Majuli and Kaziranga. Given the ongoing expansion of Jorhat Airport and increased capacity at Delhi’s Terminal 1, he argued that the introduction of a direct flight was both feasible and essential.
In response, Chandrasekaran assured Gogoi that his request would be shared with the Air India team for consideration in their network expansion plans. The development has raised hopes that better flight connectivity to Upper Assam may soon become a reality.
