Assamese To Be Adopted As Official Language In Universities And Colleges

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The Higher Education Department has asked the Universities and Colleges of the State to adopt the Government Language (Assamese) as the proper medium to communicate on paper. This important development came about after a thorough discussion between the Axom Xahitya Xabha (AXX) and the Assam Government.

On June 4, a meeting was held between AXX and the Chief Secretary of Assam Government. AXX had previously submitted a memorandum regarding the Government Language and had an in-depth discussion about it with the Chief Minister. They demanded that Assamese should be the proper medium to communicate on paper in all Universities and Colleges of the State.

After the meeting, on July 9, the Higher Education Department wrote a letter to the Director of the Higher Education Department and informed that notices and all official documents should be in the Government Language (Assamese).

The Director of the Higher Education Department on his part forwarded letters urging the same to the Registrars of Gauhati University, Dibrugarh University, Bodoland University, Cotton University, KK Handique Open University, Bhattadev University, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore University, Madhab Dev University, and Kumar Bhaskar Barma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University, as well as the colleges of the State.
