GUWAHATI: An awareness programme regarding the victims of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation was conducted by the Secretary of District Legal Services Authority Kamrup, Sujata Dutta, on Wednesday. Kaberi Sharma from an NGO named Global Organisation for Life Development (GOLD), along with a Special Railway Magistrate, was also present for the event.
The event was organized from 1 PM to 2:30 PM, and about 70 people, including members of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and other stakeholders working at the Guwahati Railway Station, took part in the event conducted under the supervision of ASC RPF Guwahati. The attendees were also briefed about how they could prevent or minimize this problem through their contributions.
The RPF staff was also briefed regarding the identification of the victims of trafficking, the major causes of human trafficking from small babies to youngsters up to 15/16 years of age irrespective of gender, the purposes for which human trafficking occurs, source areas, and destinations. The railway is considered one of the easiest, cheapest, and safest modes of transportation; hence, the role of RPF, coolies, authorised vendors, etc. is essential to prevent this social evil/cause mentioned by the experts. This awareness programme briefed the RPF staff on how to easily identify the offenders involved in human trafficking through railway routes. They were also briefed about legal as well as social aspects related to human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation.
