GUWAHATI: Barpeta MP Abdul Khaleque recently wrote a letter to the Kerala Chief Minister to establish some kind of mechanism to ensure that migrant workers from the former’s state are impacted minimally by the lockdown.

In his letter Khaleque stated that hundreds of migrant workers from Barpeta and Assam are working in labour camps of Kerala especially in Billkakad and Kannur districts who were hired by various private agencies. “We have no count or communication officially with them, other than our own voters coming to us with concerns about their near and dear ones. I am sure you will understand my predicament as a Member of Parliament”, wrote Khaleque.

“I am told your government is taking all measures to extend the helping arm of your government to them too. I have also requested Assam Chief Minister to officially coordinate with your government on this, so that we are all on the same page on this. I humbly request you for an urgent effort to identify such camps and ensure that the immigrant labourers are given food and medical aid”, he added.

In his response to the letter, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan stated that clear directions have been given to District Collectors and Local Self Governments to take into account of the ‘guest workers’. “I assure you that there is no need for any concern regarding this”, Vijayan stated to Khaleque.
