GUWAHATI: State Finance, Health and PWD minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the aspiring beneficiaries under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) would have to produce documents to prove their countries of origin and stay in Assam prior to December 31, 2014.

Sarma said the Centre is currently framing rules for the CAA and the Assam Government has already submitted its views regarding on the issue. “Once the rules are framed and implemented, everything about the CAA will be clear for the public,” he said.

Sarma said the aspiring CAA beneficiaries would have to prove that they migrated to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. “They will also have to prove their religious identity,” he said.

“The aspiring beneficiaries will also have to produce pass book, Aadhaar card, electoral photo identity card and education certificates to prove that they came to Assam before December 31, 2014,” Sarma said.

Religious persecution, the prime agenda of the CAA has now taken a back seat as Sarma pointed out that it is difficult to produce documents of such persecution. He, however, reiterated that the number of CAA beneficiaries in Assam would not cross 5 lakh figure.
